Hey everybody! My name is Cassie, and I am from Spokane, WA! Here’s a little about myself: I am a college student interested in finding out more about prison problems, and blogging about it to inform you friendly people! :) I enjoy watching TV… it is my life. Supernatural, The Strain, and Orange is the New Black are just some of my favorite shows. Activities that I love to do are listening to music, hanging out with my friends, and a lot of the time just vegging out watching TV and eating chocolate! CHOCOLATE IS THE GREATEST THING CREATED… EVER!
My name is Erinn, and I’m a freshman at Gonzaga. I’m originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, in California. I’m a special education major, earning a double certification in special education and elementary education with an endorsement in early childhood special education. So, basically, I’m studying kids! I love my major and I’m looking forward to the day I can finally call myself a teacher.
On this blog, I’ll be focusing on the intricacies of education in relation to prison population. I’m hoping to uncover details I had never thought of before and hopefully bring them to light so that other people may realize them too. I believe there is more involved in this topic than just the stereotype that criminals are uneducated; I think this stereotype is limited and vague. So I’m hoping to explore education and prison problems even further.
I’ll be covering topics like education levels of prisoners, job and skill training programs offered inside prisons and their effectiveness-- or ineffectiveness-- and the correlation between learning disabilities and arrest rates.
“Lack of educational opportunities leaves less advantaged citizens with fewer choices when it comes to feeding their families, and increases the odds these people will turn to drugs or crime to survive” (Atwans, America Now). Herein is the reason I’m interested in education and the American prison population. The two are intricately linked and have devastating effects on each other.
I hope y’all enjoy my posts, and thanks for reading!
